This paper compares the efficacy of two multigrade SAE 20W-40 railroad oils (A and B) vis-a-vis a monograde SAE-40 oil (R) in reducing wear of engine components of ALCQ locos in field trials, conducted in metre gauge sector. The VI improvers used in oils A and B differed in their shear stability. However, both A and B remained in stay-in grade after DIN 51382 test. Oil B formulated with a polymer of comparatively higher shear stability showed excellent engine wear protection. However, high liner wear was observed in locos running with oil A. The possible role of the VI improver in affecting such changes has been discussed.
