There are many offshore structures in service throughout the oceans of the world. In order to determine the overall condition for continued service or salvage, examination of the members is critical. In many cases, the owners of the structures are reluctant to invest in extensive nondestructive testing (NDT) programs for these structures. As a result, engineering decisions are sometimes made with a minimal amount of information supplied from a visual inspection of the structure. Flooded member inspection using remote ultrasonic testing methods can be used to detect in-service damage of offshore structural components. The inspection, when properly performed, is an integral part of a more intensive, overall assessment program and can play a role in salvage operations of structures.
