It is common practice when developing vehicle suspensions to use powerful kinematics and dynamics simulation packages such as ADAMS. However, these can be expensive, can require high levels of user skill and are hardware intensive. It is shown in this work that valuable design information can be obtained using a simplified vehicle ride and handling simulation model. A vehicle model, based on the roll centre concept to predict load transfer during manoeuvres has been developed using the hydraulic and dynamic systems simulation package Bath. Comparisons are made between the simplified model, ADAMS and experimental results from a test vehicle. Two case studies are presented to demonstrate the benefits of simulation in system design.
