A major element in determination of the passenger comfort in a vehicle is the mounting system which tries to reduce vibration transmission from the engine and terrain input to the passenger compartment. The emphasis on improved fuel economy which has resulted in a trend toward smaller and lighter vehicles powered by four cylinder engines, and applications of flexible composite materials in the vehicle system have led to increased frame vibration levels. This paper presents results of our study in introducing the state-of-the-art technology in the design and development of a microprocessor-based, truly adaptive, vehicle mounting system. These new mounts have the capability of: on-line learning and self-tuning their mechanical behavior based on the frequency spectrum of incoming vibrations, real-time continuous (infinite resolution) variation of the stiffness property, real time continuous variation of damping property of the mount, and self-adjusting of the mount characteristics as the vehicle ages. This new design idea has been incorporated in the development of intelligent engine mounts, using microprocessor technology and advanced control theory, and has been implemented on several vehicles. Details of design, control algorithm, and implementation results will be presented in this paper.
