The specifications for modern rolling stock demand high availability alongside a wide range of functions. However the resulting complexity in the train appears be at variance with the need for high availability. Both automated diagnosis and condition monitoring are techniques available to the train designer to keep availability high while increasing train complexity. Automated diagnosis on board the train allows the train operator to make informed choices if a train fails. Depot based diagnosis can make repair times shorter and the repair of higher quality. Diagnosis and monitoring are both techniques to be included by the train designer to reach the availability target within a cost effective design.
