Both corrosion fatigue and constant extension rate experiments have been performed upon selected thermomechanically control processed steels in sea water at potentials ranging from free corrosion to 1.10v., SCE. In the former case (corrosion fatigue) a fracture mode transition was apparent in the potential regime -0.90 to -1.10v., with secondary cracking and fissures in the rolling plane typically being present for ferritic-pearlitic microstructures tested at the most negative potential. For the constant extension rate testing experiments through-thickness ductility of precharged specimens polarized to -1.10v. was approximately 60 percent of longitudinal ones, whereas ductility was independent of orientation for no-precharged specimens. The results are indicative of hydrogen embrittlement in association with trapping by and debonding along aligned interfaces. Significance of the data with regard to possible lamellar tearing of excessively protected TMCP steels is discussed.
