Reinforced and prestressed concrete is being applied to an increasing number of very important structures in marine environments. Of the various deteriorating processes which may take place, it is not the disintegration of the concrete itself, but rather the electrochemical corrosion of the embedded steel which poses a potential problem for good durability and long-term performance. For corrosion of steel in concrete structures it is important to consider the concrete as an electrolytic system. If the passivity of the embedded steel is broken either by chlorides or by reduced alkalinity, the electrical resistivity and the availability of dissolved oxygen are the main controlling factors for corrosion. In the present paper these electrolytic factors are discussed. In the discussion the effects of cracks and galvanic coupling between externally exposed and embedded steel are also included.
