A pipeline may develop a leak due to several causes, starting with accidents to sabotage. The above problems can be minimized to a great extent if information of a possible leak is known well in advance so that appropriate action can be taken. Techniques ranging from visual inspection to computer controlled instrumentation can be used to monitor pipelines for leaks. The WAVEALERT acoustic leak detection system, which can provide very fast and accurate information of the presence of a leak and its location on the line, is discussed in this paper.
