The driving forces for materials substitution for the last 15 years, and it is anticipated that they will continue to be so for the foreseeable future, have been the government mandated decreased fuel consumption and the customers desire for higher performance and quality. A brief outline of past actions, such as downsizing and the use of high strength steels (HSS), will be presented. The advent of further increases in the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) requirements from the current value of 27.5 mpg, will undoubtedly lead to another round of materials substitution. The magnitude of the increase in the CAFE standard will determine the types and the amount of the substitute materials. Materials for both powertrain and body structures will be discussed. The potential for the extensive use of HSS, aluminium alloys and composites in body structural applications will be reviewed.
