A Laser Vibration Sensor Inspection Test System (LVS/ITS) has been developed under a United States Army Tank-Automotive Command (TACOM) sponsored program. This development effort has been accomplished as a joint effort between the contractor, Mechanical Technology, Incorproated (MTI), the system user, Tooele Army Depot (TEAD), and the material developer, TACOM. The LVS/ITS is a mobile, multipurpose vibration test system, which will be used for inspecting mechanical equipment, such as automotive transmissions, transfer cases, and engines, at military overhaul facilities. The LVS/ITS primarily incorporates state-of-the-art commercially available hardware and unique vibration signal analysis software. The LVS/ITS hardware description precedes a discussion of the approach used to develop a gear diagnostic technique, for which a United States Government patent has been filed.
