Rattling in change over gears is generated by those gear wheels not under load and thus being able to move from impact to impact within the backlashes of the meshes of the gears. Noise connected with rattling and unwished for motor-cars can be reduced by certain measures within the gearbox, but even more efficiently by a proper design of the complete drive train. In recent years some methods have been developed to analyse impulsive vibrations of that kind. They are based on impact theory for multibody-systems and allow a realistic prediction of parameter influences. Examples from practice are given.
