An in-plane vehicle model incorporating a tunable shock absorber is developed and the ride vibration response of the vehicle model is evaluated for random road excitations. A tunable shock absorber is realized to provide variable damping by integrating pressure relief valves to a conventional shock absorber. The nonlinear restoring and damping forces due to the tunable shockabsorber are characterized by an array of equivalent linear stiffness and damping coefficients, using a generalized linearization technique based upon energy functions. The random response of the two-axle vehicle model is established using the linearization technique. The simulation results show that the vehicle ride performance can be improved considerably in the frequency range to which human body is most sensitive, via the proposed shock absorber.
