Over past decades, the lubrication of locomotive traction motor gears has advanced from heavy asphaltic gear lubricants through greases and semifluid greases, and now towards oil. Progress has been toward less viscous lubricants to avoid operational difficulties associated with cold weather. The principles of elastohydrodynamics were applied to the oil lubrication of traction gears. For these involute spur gears, the calculated oil film thickness was compared to the surface finish for a variety of load and speed conditions along the line of action. A range of oil viscosities and types (mineral, synthetic) was examined. Theory and practice were compared in field trials at a major Canadian railway over several years. Premeasured gear sets showed outstanding wear resistance using two mineral oils of differing viscosity and identical additive system.
