The corrsoion propagation in a number of painted precoated automotive steels has been studied after atmospheric exposure for 15 months. The steels were hot-dip galvanized, electrogalvanized and Zn-Ni alloy coated steel. They were phosphated, electrocoated and some panels were also topcoated. The performance of the zinc coatings seems to be dependent on the zinc thickness. A model for the mechanism of corrosion is described.
