The production of bio-gas from sewage treatment is described, and the conditions necessary for economically viable use of biogas for CHP are outlined. Results for a Waukesha gas engine operating at 1500 r/min on bio-gas are presented which show: the effect on the energy balance of load, bio-gas composition, and airfuel ratio; the effect of bio-gas composition on air fuel ratio provided by the carburettor and how this effects the engine performance (proposals for optimum control of air fuel ratio are included). Justification for an increase in compression ratio from the present 8:1 is presented, and the modifications made to achieve this are described.
