Safety is a primary concern in the design of aeroengine components. The rules applied during engine certification to ensure that the risks of in-service failures are sufficiently remote are reviewed. The implications of these rules for the design of various gas turbine components (discs, blades, etc.) are discussed, in terms of possible failure mechanisms and the precautions which must be taken to avoid these in service. The cyclic life limitations applied to critcial components are discussed in detail; the various methods of calculation of cyclic lives are presented and some examples are given of the validation evidence required to support these calculations.
