Metal injection moulding (MIM) is a cost effective process for manufacturing complex shape steel parts in mass production for a wide range of applications. Recent R & D activities have prooved the feasibility of MIM for aero engine parts, e.g. actuators and even blades and vanes. Injection moulding offers considerable potential with regard to production cost reduction and improved fatigue life. The powder materials processed by MIM for aero engine applications like nickel superalloys and intermetallic phases require advanced sintering, hot isostatic pressing and post finishing technologies in order to meet the geometrical tolerances, material strength and a quality standard. Specimens and prototype aero engine parts made from nickel superalloys and nickel aluminides have been produced by MIM and microstructure as well as mechanical properties were investigated. Whereas nickel superalloy MIM parts have potential for recent applications, further development is necessary for nickel aluminide parts.
