Overall economy of the whole propulsion and electricity power generation plant is a prerequisite for modern passenger ships. It can mean survival in a very competitive market. Steam or gas turbines are no longer considered for propulsion of the latest newbuildings and this constitutes a major step towards more economic ships. The machinery design needs to consider the ship's energy requirements as a whole since propulsion, electricity supplies, heating, air conditioning and fresh water generation are all interdependent. Overall economy, involving first costs, fuel costs and maintenance costs, becomes the criterion by which alternative machinery proposals are judged. This paper examines the above aspects using, as examples, some recent interesting passenger ship machinery installations.
