Well functioning machinery is an essential asset for a passenger ship. Thanks to positive development in the reliability of diesel engines and components it is not difficult to devise several satisfactory machinery configurations for a given application. The author's company has performed many economic studies of different machinery systems which have shown that systems having similar technical merit can have very marked differences when assessed in economic terms. This paper reviews the factors involved in optimum economy; low operating costs are the aim.
