Sheet metal stamping and the assembly of sheet metal fabrications remains the primary manufacturing mode for automobile bodies. Despite its economic importance, developments in sheet metal stamping have until recently owed more to artisans and to art than to technologists and to technology. The manufacture of sheet metal components for automotive applications typically requires several operations. Of these, the most resistant to analysis are the draw or forming operations and those related to flanging. Because of their complexity, it is only recently that computer-based simulations to analyze these operations have been developed. The status of these simulations and the level of manufacturing knowledge required to apply them will be reviewed.
