The process of automating a previously manual arc welding cell with sensor-guided robots has proven to be a difficult task. State of the art sensor technology has opened up a large field of application possibilities. The applications can be successfully accomplished if all factors, both human and machine, are correctly integrated. The various steps, from initial concept to full production, required to implement an automatic arc welding system into an automotive body shop are outlined.
