Four of the world's largest gantry robots have been built to clean and refurbish space shuttle solid rocket booster (SRB) nonmotor components. Standing nearly 30 feet high, the robots are the first of their type to be used in the national aeronautics and space administration (NASA) shuttle program. The robots will be used in Marshall Space Flight Center' new assembly and refurbishment facility located at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The robots have the capability of performing 55 separate motion routines to accomplish 9 tasks on the SRB structures including a high-pressure coating removal and application of the thermal protection system. Using a variety of end effectors, the robot arms move around the booster hardware performing operations inside and out. Another special feature is a telescoping arm providing 13.6 feet of vertical travel.
