The lithium ion battery with manganese spinel cathode is attractive for an EV (electric vehicle) as well as consumer cells due to lower materials cost. A spirally wound 4/3 A size cell was developed to test materials for use in portable and EV batteries. The 4/3 A size is a convenient development vehicle since it is economical of materials but allows meaningful energy density, cycle life and stability estimates. Initial cells had high power capabilities with 85% capacity retention at 2 C, demonstrating the high power capability of the ion spinel system. Energy densities were 220 Wh/l and 84 Wh/kg for the complete cell. This significant improvement in battery characteristics due to the improved spinel material in an unoptimized cell now makes the ion spinel cell a promising candidate for both consumer and EV applications.
