A mathematical model for desalination was developed to correlate the complex dimensional, electrical, hydraulic and chemical relationships in a cross flow spirally wound electrodialysis (SpED) module, leading to a computer program to predict desalination performance and estimate electrical current efficiency in the cross flow SpED process, which could be useful for SpED module designing. Computer prediction of the performance of SpED prototypes proved accurate. When the conditions of actual runs were fed into it, the computer gave very similar results in hydraulic drops, product concentrations and total current. In operating conditions when there was no significant polarization, the computer could also predict the applied module voltage and its distribution with accuracy. However, in conditions of depletion polarization, it failed to predict the relationship of applied EMF to the resulting current. This led to further examination of the polarized state and some new discovery and explanation for the polarization. With the experience obtained from modelling and setting up parallel flow SpED modules, it is possible to carry out further research on cross flow SpED modules.
