With the rapid increase in power and decrease in cost of VLSI chips, it is timely to consider the feasibility of their exploitation in advanced control algorithms for vehicle management systems. The use of such controllers to optimise energy utilisation is justified by the scarcity and high cost of liquid fuels and will increasingly become obligatory in order to satisfy 'green' legislation. To meet this challenge, advanced engine controllers must be developed which can provide more precise control of fuel flow, air flow, ignition timing, ignition duration, and exhaust gas recirculation. Further improvements in control can be achieved if the vehicle transmission system is included in the overall control scheme.
