The US Air Force, along with the computer industry, is actively involved in optimizing its currently deployed computer base, upgrading its computers and working toward the employment of the next generation of computer technology. This challenge is being met through advances in component technology, modularity and parallel processing. This review covers applications to the ageing F-111 aircraft, the F-15E Eagle and the Advanced Tactical Fighter still under development and validation. Emphasis is laid on three distinctive characteristics of the ATF avionics: modularity, integration and commonality. Current and future programmes, including the next-generation Pilot's Associate artificial intelligence processor and software system, are outlined.
