Computer systems have and will continue to have a significant impact on the aeronautics industry, both in commercial airlines and Federal government sponsored programs. While increased passenger safety may be a chief goal, the computer also is being used for other purposes. On the ground, computers have been used for aircraft testing for several years. Now they are being employed in fuel planning, sophisticated airline data processing systems and even maintenance. Onboard computer systems are becoming increasingly important since airlines are trying to relieve their pilots of some of the tedious aspects of their jobs, and are trying to save fuel and money. The latest advancements in aviation are related to computer technology, and the potential future developments are examined to see what may be on the horizon.
