As commercial fiber optics systems gird the globe, they are becoming alternatives to military satellites for command, control, communications and intelligence (C3I) systems. The capability of fiber should be considered for military planning. The military community should heed this advice. Fiber optic communications systems have been used commercially for more than 20 years, but only in the last 10 years has fiber emerged as a cost-effect, viable telecommunications technology literally revolutionizing the industry. The lightwave systems that now traverse the country, as well as the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean, provide the military with an easily accessible and commercially available alternative to satellites for handling its peacetime, long-haul communications traffic.
