Two major companies involved in the research and development of laser communications systems-transmitters and receivers-are Rockwell International and McDonnell Douglas. The small laser diodes, being developed by McDonnell Douglas Electronic Systems Company, include designs for jam resistant aircraft and submarine laser communications, laser radar, electro-optic countermeasures, acquisition and tracking and for laser technology research. Rockwell International's science center has developed techniques to coherently combine arrays of independent low power lasers-gallium arsenide devices-to achieve moderate to high output power. The methods used to combine laser arrays result from exploiting the potential offered by 2-wave and 4-wave mixing in photorefractive and artificial photorefractive media, according to company scientists. Rockwell has built submarine and airborne laser communications receivers, with the company's current interest centered around solid-state lasers for satellite applications for downlink communications.
