The concurrent development of two advanced European fighter aircraft is carrying with it the future health of a number of defense electronics firms. This will undoubtedly by the last time Atlantic alliance members can afford two European-built front-line fighters. And even now, as estimates of development costs for the French Rafale and the Anglo-German-Italian-Spanish Eurofighter escalate, partners in the two programs have begun to express their reservations. Disagreement over the military requirements, but especially over industrial sharing, led the French to go it alone in 1987 with Rafale. But the Eurofighter and Rafale will continue to share many performance and design characteristics.
