An experimental Heat and Mass Transfer Scoping Test Apparatus was built to obtain design data for a larger test that will assess technical feasibility of the open-cycle OTEC process. The apparatus was erected at the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii and became operational in the summer of 1987. After initial debugging, it produced 350 gallons/h (1600 l/h) of potable water having a salinity of 86 p.p.m., 1/5 that of local tap water available at the test site.
