Substantial energy can be recovered from low grade waste heat, process gas, or waste gas pressure letdown. Centripetal (radial inflow) turboexpanders are well adapted to such energy conservation schemes. One such application is Ocean Energy. A 'Mini OTEC' demonstration program, completed in 1979, utilized a closed Ammonia cycle to drive a 50 kw Turboexpander generator unit. Detailed process description will be presented together with Expander design, instrumentation and control systems used for the Mini OTEC Program. Special Expander features will be discussed. Turboexpanders for future Demonstration (OTEC-1) and full scale power plants are available without any new development being required. (DePo)
