Analyses of naval command and control performance have highlighted many problem areas including the large volume of information available, which must be assessed in real time. A laboratory-based demonstrator that undertakes tactical data fusion using an expert system has been built to assess the potential of this technology. Preliminary tests with real recorded exercise data have shown real-time performance to be inadequate for an operational system. Various approaches are being followed to address this problem. One approach, namely, implementing tactical data fusion using connectionist architectures, is described.
