The development of an anticollision radar system has to consider simultaneously different aspects tied to technology, driver interaction, and vehicle. Therefore, an anticollision system for the detection of stationary and moving obstacles on the same lane up to a distance of 140 m needs knowledge about sensor, vehicle dynamics, road scenario, and driver behaviour. In the proposed approach, the interpretation of radar maps for collision risk estimate is pursued by explicit representation of knowledge; moreover, knowledge sources are available at the desired computational level. A clear decomposition of processing modules and the definition of their tasks allow to represent knowledge with a suitable formalism; information exchange between modules is accomplished in a blackboard architecture, where relevant knowledge achieved by one module is available to the other processing modules. Modular decomposition and knowledge representation for each module are presented. Due to the simultaneous implementation of knowledge sources about sensor, vehicle, and driver behaviour, an anticollision radar system can only be developed in codesign between automotive and electronic industry. CENTRO RICERCHE FIAT is following this approach in tight cooperation with FIAT AUTO and MAGNETI MARELLI.
