The paper will outline the nature of the electronic systems used in the current generation of British military vehicles. It will then show how factors including the increasing complexity of current and future vehicles, increasingly complex battleflied management yielding more and more data, and the needs to increase crew effectiveness and reduce numbers are leading to an integrated approach to vehicle electronics. The VERDI programme (Vehicle Electronics Research Defence Initiative) will be described as the current DRA initiative to tackle these issues. The programme involves over thirty industrial companies working together in collaboration to equip a military vehicle prototype with a fully integrated vehicle electronics and databus architecture with the aim of demonstrating the advantages of such a system. The technical content of the system will be outlined and the potential application of some features to civilian vehicles will be discussed.
