Developing the intelligent journey is a gradual process. Since the beginnings of the automobile in the 1880s, numbers have steadily increased and appropriate measures have had to be taken to control traffic flow. Significant developments have been: the first use of traffic signal towers in New York in 1918, control of traffic lights by contacts embedded in the road in 1934, and electronic traffic computers to control traffic flow from about 1965. Control, however, is not enough to ensure easy movement of traffic. Drivers need advance information upon which to make decisions and communication equipment to link them with information sources and other drivers. Research into navigation and communication systems will continue to provide us with answers to the problem of congested roads as we move into the next century. The value of developing anticollision systems is very clear. Information here is the key to reducing accidents. 60-90 % all accidents could be prevented if the driver could be made aware of an impending danger just one second earlier so that corrective action could be taken earlier.
