The severe requirements placed on radars operating in a naval environment, coupled with the necessity to perform a variety of tasks, has led to the creation of a multitude of individual radars, each of which is specialised for a particular task. The procurement cost, weight, power and space considerations of equipping a ship with several radars has fuelled the demand for one radar per ship that can perform multiple tasks. Multi-function Phased Array radars are now being designed to meet this demand. However, the design, development and production costs can run into millions (pounds or dollars). Therefore it is necessary to maximise the potential of the system design in order to justify, and to recoup, this heavy expenditure. By adopting a modular approach to the system design it is possible to produce modules of equipment than can be configured to create a family of radars suitable for a number of applications. This paper not only examines the advantages to be gained by utilising the philosophy of modularity but also explores some technical difficulties in doing so. A radar system which is currently being developed jointly by three major European radar manufacturers and adopts such a modular approach is described.
