Mechanical components in motor vehicles are increasingly being replaced by their electronic counterparts. With the introduction of the electronic dashboard, the mileage counter function will also be required in electronic form. It will, however, be necessary to ensure that the current mileage is not 'forgotten' in the event of a failure in the supply voltage. The optimal solution here is a nonvolatile EEPROM-type memory. This, however, involves two basic difficulties: If data is to be retained reliably over a period of at least ten years, standard EEPROM's may only be reprogrammed a limited number of times, not enough to achieve the required count range of 6 decades with the necessary degree of reliability. If the storage process is disturbed, for example as the result of accidental or deliberate interruptions in the supply voltage, there is the risk of a permanent alteration in the count or of its being manipulated. It is thus virtually impossible to use a standard chip for an electronic mileage counter. The chips described below have been developed specifically for this purpose and optimized with a view to these problems. The mileage counter operates on the basis of two chips: one of them, designed in CMOS technology, provides the counting pulses and also has various other functions such as day-mileage counter and speedometer, while the other, of NMOS floating gate design, serves for the non-volatile storage of the count, at the same time taking into account the safety aspects referred to above.
