Requirements for the design of a human assisted expert system for the Boeing DC Power System testbed are discussed. The importance of a user-friendly expert system man-machine interface (MMI) is presented. The development of high-level algorithms for load management and fault-identification is also discussed. Emphasis is placed on real-time operating constraints. The problems of MMI, control system I/O, and the scheduling of high-level algorithms are detailed. It is shown that fast-response autonomy can be applied to present-day electrical power system hardware control and that these same techniques can be used for future vehicles.
