The environment, safety and comfort represent main development criteria in the automotive industry. As a consequence, the CO2 emissions as well as the fuel consumption of motor vehicles must be reduced. Furthermore, the safety and crash requirements have to be met without compromising the comfort regarding vibration behaviour and vehicle acoustics. One approach is the use of lightweight structures. Reduced mass and partially reduced stiffness can lead to unwanted oscillations, which can be noticed acoustically through airborne and structure-borne noise and in some cases even visually. The implementation of an active vibration control (AVC) system offers the solution to this conflict of objectives. By using actuators based on electro active polymer (EAP) technology, the vibrations can be damped and the total weight of the vehicle can still be reduced.
