Self-powered sensors enable monitoring systems for large structures, e.g. bridges. As power supply, resonant systems are proposed, which generate electrical energy from mechanical oscillations. By using tuned vibration absorbers as resonant systems, monitoring and vibration reduction can be integrated into a single system. The transfer of mechanical into electrical energy can also improve damping of the vibration absorber. As an application, a self-powered temperature monitoring for the bearings of for a rail freight car was studied, which aims at avoiding damages due to overheating of the bearings. Also, a design method was established, which comprises of system simulation and a step-wise system integration of components in hardware-in-the-loop tests. This allowed for the reduction of effort for field tests and an increase in the system development. Further work packages included basic studies on energy harvesting and vibration reduction with dielectric elastomer transducers, and rotational vibration absorbers with integrated self-powered sensors. Further, a feasibility study on large absorbers for bridges with integrated self-powered sensors was conducted. Finally, the developed system was assessed by reliability analysis in order to get hints for further improvements.
