Heat-affected zone (HAZ) of a large heat input welded joint typically found in a very large container ship is remarkably softened over a wide range. In this study, the influence of the strength mismatching on the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) and fracture strength of such welded joints under tension is investigated both experimentally and numerically. The CTOD of the specimens having a surface notch at the fusion line (BOND notch) is found to have the dominant deformation on the HAZ side with lower yield strength. The weld metal (WM) with higher yield strength restrains the plastic deformation of the HAZ, resulting in the large maximum principal stress ahead of the notch tip and a plastic strain concentration at the notch tip in the HAZ. It is found that the cleavage fracture of welded joints with strength mismatching obeys a critical tensile stress criterion. By using the fracture strength and critical stress relationship, the influence of strength mismatching on the critical CTOD value and the fracture strength are evaluated quantitatively.
