To further improve vehicle safety detailed analysis of real world accidents is necessary to understand the related injury mechanisms. According to GIDAS (German In-Depth Accident Study) most car to car front accidents occur at midcrash severity. In this range medium and severe thoracic injuries already occur. This study shows a reconstruction of a real world frontal crash with mid-crash seventy out of the AARU (Audi Accident Research Unit) database. The selected car to car accident was reconstructed by AARU by means of pc-crash software in order to obtain the kinematic accident preconditions. FE-structural simulations were subsequently done in order to develop the dynamic conditions for the occupant simulations. FE HIII-dummy Model and the Total human model for safety (THUMS) under Pam-Crash code were used for the occupant simulation. A qualitative comparison was conducted between the real accident occupant's car deformation and the FE structural simulation in order to prove accuracy and achieve an occupant s dynamics as close as possible to the real word accident environment. The original THUMS was assessed under table-top non-impact test simulation in order to verify the model's biofidehty. The human body model bone stiffness values were modified to match the real word occupant age. A comparison between driver and passenger restraint system loading was done, as well as an injury prediction comparison between the dummy model and THUMS response for both cases. The THUMS shows good biofidehty under the Table-Top non-impact test for diagonal belt and distributed loading ("restraint-like loading") after material changes made on the model. Detailed comparison between the Hill-dummy models and THUMS regarding thoracic loading under different restraint conditions are discussed.
