Drivetrain Innovations (DTI) has developed a compact 2-speed (Twinspeed) transmission for electric vehicles. The transmission provides Powershift functionality; a shift from first to second gear and vice versa can be done without torque interruption. The design and control strategy of this EV transmission will be presented in this paper. Using the technology from the Twinspeed EV transmission, DTI is also developing a multi-speed powershift transmission for a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV). A PHEV primarily uses a possibly downsized battery pack but has an extended drive range thanks to the additional internal combustion engine (ICE), thereby circumventing range-anxiety frequently associated with pure EVs. For the PHEV, the EV powertrain is extended with a small ICE that operates as a range extender. The powertrain can operate in various hybrid modes. Contrary to comparable PHEV powertrains, DTI's parallel PHEV concept only requires one EM/G to obtain a full hybrid PHEV powertrain. In fact, it is a simple extension of the original Twinspeed EV concept, and this approach results in lower costs, less required packaging space and higher efficiency. This paper describes the PHEV powertrain design, operating modes and its control strategy.
