Overhead presentation. Due to their outstanding mechanical properties and low weight, fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) are an excellent material for many applications. Owing to the possibility of realizing complex geometries and integrative designs, FRP's play an important role for lightweight concepts in automotive construction. A specific two-step production process has great potential for the realization of FRP-parts in large volumes. Firstly, a near-net-shape textile is manufactured, the so-called textile preform. This step includes the production of the textiles as well as subsequent processes such as cutting, handling, forming and joining the textile material. Secondly, the textile preform is infiltrated with a polymer matrix material and is consolidated to the final FRP-part. At the moment, for the production of FRP in large volumes the main drawbacks are both the high material costs and the high amount of manual labor during textile preforming. Possible counteractions include innovative approaches for the economic production of high-performance fiber materials and for automated preforming processes. In this presentation, innovative preforming concepts are shown. This is explained by taking the example of the ITA Preformcenter, a flexible robot cell for the production of textile preforms. One focus is the application of binder materials on the high-performance fiber materials. These binder materials can be used to improve the handling and storage properties of the textile preform.
