The standard DEA models were all formulated for desired inputs and outputs. However, in the real-life applications there frequently exist also undesired inputs and/or outputs. The problem is how to treat undesirable outputs jointly produced with desirable outputs. Ignorance of the undesirable outputs is equal to the saying that they have no value in the final evaluation and may provide misleading results. It is therefore necessary to credit DMUs for their provision of desirables and penalize them for their provision of undesirables. The purpose of this chapter is to evaluate the applicability of the Data Envelopment Analysis methods in the efficiency assessment of citybus microtrips (trips of the bus between two consecutive bus stops) treated as decision making units. The aim is to help transportation authorities to not only maximize beneficial outputs, such as for example vehicle speed, but also to reduce the production of undesirable (or negative) outputs in the form of vehicle pollution emissions.
