Drive System Design (DSD) and Yasa Motors have designed a 3 speed electric vehicle powertrain for the small to medium vehicle market segment. DSD's research has shown that significant efficiency and economy gains can be made by using multi-speed transmission for electric vehicles. An innovative axial flux YASA motor (from Yasa Motors) is used which has a high power density, allowing a compact lightweight motor. When coupled with a multi-speed gearbox, the torque requirement of the motor can be reduced. This combination of reduced motor size and increased efficiency helps to reduce the power requirements of the powertrain. This effectively increases the vehicle range whilst maintaining respectable levels of performance. DSD's transmission concept has been developed to include seamless shifting using a novel application of existing technology. The design work has included the selection of the most suitable speed ratio and ratio steps to ensure good gearshift quality performance. The design features ultra low noise gears with high efficiency. These gears have been optimised using DSD's gear design methodologies. These methodologies have been proven to provide low noise performance in electric vehicle applications. The transmission features a park lock with a pawl and toothed wheel. This has been designed using DSD's park lock simulation tool which determines the engagement and nonengagement speeds. This can be used to optimise the park pawl and toothed wheel geometry prior to prototype hardware to save considerable time in the development of the park lock. The park lock is actuated using a Camcon electrical actuator with low power consumption.
