The continuing advances in battery technology Iead to the rebirth of the batteryelectric car. To increase the driving range of a given battery, the efficiency of the vehicle traction system is of highest significance. The analysis of standardized and, more important, customer-based driving cycles lead to the conclusion that it is best to place the maximum efficiency of the traction system close to the vehicle's natural resistance curve. To reach this goal, a decent choice of all components in the traction system is necessary. ZF proposes a low-cost design with a high power-weight ratio, which features system components according to the above-mentioned guidelines. The axle drive presented here will be completed within due time with integrated power electronics. This integrated power electronics not only manages crucial interfaces between electronics and motor, but additionally incorporates the motor control software, making the best possible use of the envisaged induction motor (ASM).
