New MegaSwapBoxes possessing a loading capacity of more than 23 t facilitate a sustainable intermodal transport chain (road, rail, inland waterways and short sea shipping) and are able to achieve the optimal shift between different transport carriers. Therefore, in this thesis an approach was used integrating all relevant actors of the intermodal transport chain in the development process. Presenting a sustainable MegaSwapBox a solution has turned out which unifies best the advantages of a semi-trailer and a container with those of a swap body. With 100 m3 cargo volume it accomplishes a desire to high loading capacity expressed in Europe. The MegaSwapBox has an internal height of 3 m and can be transported on a special chassis which stores swap bodies and containers as well, on carriages codified to C45 and C75 and on vessels within the existing standards and directives, e.g. like the Directive 96/53/EC under the TIR procedure in Europe. To optimize the operational processes, special equipment is not necessary. For that reason the MegaSwapBox possesses corner fittings of 45 ft. and thus can be loaded from the top in the terminal as well as grap lifting appliances in the bottom. The capability of the MegaSwapBox's stackability helps to reduce the stock yard in the terminal and ensures a high stability and the safety of loaded goods. To secure the loaded goods against damages and theft the loading unit has lockable doors at the rear portal and both side walls. Furthermore the loading and unloading process is simplified due to the entirely openable side doors. Additionally a liftable roof assures the loading capacity when utilizing fully the existing internal height. In the course of a testing run where the transport of the MegaSwapBox from Gliwice (Poland) via Mannheim (Germany) and Rotterdam (Netherlands) to Ellesmere Port (Great Britain) was shown it could be proven that the terminals as well as the transport carriers vessel and rail did not have to be changed concerning the technical features. From the development and the test run a roadmap for a long term standardized introduction of the MegaSwapBox has been derived.
