Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA has a long history of serving as a "Living Laboratory" for clean advanced transportation technologies built around the electric bus system operated by the Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) since 1992. CARTA oversees an integrated electric bus and parking system in downtown Chattanooga that is internationally recognized as a model in innovation. This system supports a vibrant downtown business sector in Chattanooga by delivering thousands of employees, residents, visitors and students alike to a wide range of downtown destinations. At the same time, this system also has had a great impact on reducing traffic congestion and serving as a critical element in Chattanooga's attainment of compliance with the air pollution requirements of the Environmental Protection Act (EPA) of 1972. Today, Chattanooga continues its legacy of innovation in the advanced technology marketplace through a new partnership between the Center for Energy, Transportation and the Environment (CETE) at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and CARTA for the development of a hydrogen hybrid internal combustion engine (HHICE) bus and through testing and demonstrating contactless battery charging, or inductive power transfer (IPT). This paper will detail the historical foundation of Chattanooga's role in advanced transportation technologies and provide details regarding how the HHICE bus project and IPT system will contribute to advancing electric drive vehicles in the marketplace.
